This week we had in-progress critiques, and it was really nice seeing everyone’s progress and being able to partake in their thought processes. I’m going to take a brief break from 3D printing. There were some group notes to help with removing clay from the cutters, such as using store-bought clay, WD-40 (stinky oil), and a cornstarch-filled sock. I definitely want to try those things, but I’d really like to come back to hand-cutting letters to see if that ritualistic aspect feels closer to “right.”

At this point, I’ve attended two Vietnamese weddings, and they were equally beautiful and saddening. Beautiful, because I love seeing two people choose each other forever—and seeing how much extended family contributes to planning and running a Vietnamese wedding. But there’s a little voice that can’t help but try to live out my own marriage in theirs. As I claim my space in the family as a caregiver, how much of my family will be taken from me the day I find a partner? Every groom and bride had looks of relief to have their two day long, grueling wedding finally over with, but it all feels so out of reach for my own potential wedding.

For some reason, the repetitive movements make sense right now. I think eventually I’ll incorporate both hand-cutting and stamp-cutting. But this upcoming week, I’m going to revisit the ritualistic aspect of hand-cutting.

Long awaited bountiful kiln harvest from UofL’s kiln, Spud. Shoutout Lalana and Molly, they’re the best!!!!!!!!!!
