SP26 2
This week, Brian introduced wooden paddles and demonstrated how he uses a Dremel drill to add texture to their surfaces. I’ve been looking through Dragons and Lotus Blossoms, a book featuring Vietnamese ceramics from different Vietnamese dynasties. I’ve been really drawn to the botanical and geometric line work on the pots and thought it would be interesting to use those patterns as inspiration.
He also demonstrated how paddles can be gently slapped on the walls of a pot to create surface texture and design. I threw a few pots to begin the process, but was quickly whiplashed at how difficult it is to center harder clay. Although I wasn’t able to successfully make many pots, I did get a lot of valuable practice with spiral wedging.
