This week, I learned a lot about wood-firing prep! On Tuesday, I watched Grace load the wood kiln, and she explained how to wad the posts and why the posts need to be at different levels so the fire can travel through unique pathways. That variation helps the ash form a more interesting, less uniform “glaze.” After loading, I helped her brick up the kiln. We followed an image from the last wood firing, but because the bricks shift over time with repeated firings, the final rows at the top were much trickier than expected. Once everything was in place, we sealed the door with a doorslip made of reclaim and grog, which was surprisingly satisfying to apply.
This coming week, I’m looking forward to building the concrete pedestal. I already talked to Brian about temporarily using a space in the individual rooms to construct it, and I just need to follow up with him to finalize that plan.
